Transfer to Us

Switching to a new web host can be a complicated and stressful process.
However, we’ve created this easy-to-follow guide to give you some insight into how you it’s done.

Step 1
Purchase Ark Web Hosting Package

Firstly, purchase an Ark Web Hosting package. To do so, click here. Make sure to not cancel the web hosting package provided by your old company, however, we’d recommend not telling them either as this could tempt them from making the process harder for you.

Step 2
Backup Website

At this point, you will have two web hosting accounts; one with us and one with your old provider. Before progressing any further, make a backup of your website so that if you have any problems, you will be able to safely restore your website back to normal.

Step 3
Transfer the Website Files

Before progressing any further, you need to know the platform that your website is built upon. This will then determine the route you take in moving your website. Here are two examples:

1. Wordpress - Export the MySQL database from your old provider and import it onto our web hosting package. Then, export the Wordpress files from your old provider and import them onto our web hosting package. You will need to then access the “wp-config” file to make sure the MySQL database information match up.

2. HTML and CSS - Using an FTP client, transfer all the files from your old web hosting provider to our web hosting package. Filezilla is a popular software that is often used.

3. Transfer Emails - This is possible only if your old web hosting provider uses cPanel. If you’re interested in doing this, here’s a guide to help you through the process.

We want to be absolutely clear on moving to Ark Web Hosting, this is completely free. We do not charge a penny.

Step 4
Update the DNS Records

Fourthly, you will need to update the DNS Records. These act as signposts between where you website is hosted and the domain name (e.g. yourwebsite.com). You’ve moved where your website is hosted (from your old provider to us) and so it’s necessary to update the signposts.

In order to do this, you may need to contact the company that you host your domain name with. They will be able to tell you where the DNS Records are located. Once you've located them, you will need to correct your name servers to the following:

ns1.arkwebhosting.co.uk
ns2.arkwebhosting.co.uk

Once you’ve updated the name servers, it can take up to 72 hours to complete so bare with the internet. There’s nothing we, or any other web hosting company, can do to speed up this process.

That's it, you've finished!

Once the 72 hour period has passed, it should be done. You are now free to cancel the account with your old web hosting provider.

However, if you have any concerns, don’t hesitate to contact us before cancelling your old web hosting provider. We can double check for you to see if everything’s done correctly.
